Massachusetts offers huge diversity for visitors. An hour away from the gateway city of Boston is the North Shore, with historic Salem and Cape Ann. Two hours west, and you are in the lovely countryside of the Berkshire Hills, home of some of America's best summer arts festivals.
Alternatively, head south, via Plymouth, with its Pilgrim Fathers' heritage, out to Cape Cod, one of my favourite parts of the state. The 'arm' of what is always referred to as 'the Cape' juts out into the Atlantic. Thanks to its laid-back informality, America's original summer hoilday destination is still popular with celebrities and politicians. Enjoy the beaches, go sailing, golfing, cycling or whale watching - there's always lots to do. Add in picturesque Colonial towns and villages, antiques and craft shops, cosy B+Bs and fine inns, and you have the perfect blend of fun and relaxation.
