"Last Judgment" in the Todi Cathedral

Painted by Ferraù Fenzoni (also known as Il Faenzone), the Last Judgment is a fresco found in the Duomo of Todi. Although he isn't the most well-known artist of his day, this fresco displays a skill few managed to master, as frescoes are painted and wet plaster. This means that the plaster must be kept wet while painting (often a period of weeks rather than hours) and that the colors painted on would change as the plaster dried. This meant an accomplished fresco artist had to have huge reserves of experience and foresight, as both would be needed to plan out the perfect fresco.

The painting itself is a deptiction of the Last Judgment (obviously). Souls condemned to hell are suffering near the bottom, while those rising to heaven are joining the figure of God high above them. The piece is topped with a circular stained glass window possibly standing in for the sun, in front of which we see Jesus seated, passing judgment. The surrounding walls are reduced to brick, meaning you can focus entirely on the fresco.
