The Oltrepo Pavese in Lombardy is a virtually unknown region to tourists of Italy. Strangely enough this area, reminiscent of Tuscany with its smoothe hills, castles and medieval villages, has not (yet) succeeded in attracting foreign visitors. Being the largest wine producing area of Lombardy and one of the largest of the whole of Italy, the local wines are sold to Milanese and local clients only, or become part of the better known "spumante" of other regions, like with the pinot nero grapes that end up in the Berlucchi sparkling wines. The Oltrepo Pavese is certainly worth a visit though, as it offers magnificent landscapes and views, excellent and truly traditional italian food and wine, peace and quiet and very good walking and cycling opportunities.
