Italy’s Piedmont region wraps across the arch at the top of the boot creeping up the base of the Alps and Apennines. This region is known for producing quality, location and blend specific appellations like Barbera, Barolo and Asti and yields the largest number of prize winning wines of any Italian region. The cooler dry conditions best suit red grapes but plenty of different flavours and colours comes out to the soil, so there is a good range of flavours to taste.

Many wine makers in this region have had their land and wine making traditions passed down to them for generations so there are many small plots of land producing traditional vintages, which are more interesting to tour, as well as improving your wine tasting experience, giving you a much greater chance of meeting the wine makers themselves, it makes for a pleasing rural patchwork of vineyards and hilltop villages of cobbled streets and lots of traditional architecture.

Stay off the main road to find the best Piedmont has to offer. One of the nicest routes to travel is along the Lange Hills from Alba where you’ll hit wine village after wine village with plenty of cellars and tasting centres along the way. The big reds the region is known for compliment the rich foods you’ll find on the menus featuring truffles, fonduta (cheese fondue) and rich meats and if you’re really lucky you may come across a friendly family winery in time to be welcomed into a big traditional Piedmont meal.

Best for the wine makers

In my mind Italy is awash with vineyards in stunning locations. You’ve got your rows on the hilltops and your neat fields in valleys amongst the russets and orange colours Italy is famous for. They also take their wine seriously and have done for generations so you can listen to people speak with passion about what they create. There are lots of farmer, growers for whom the wine itself is better reward than international renown and they drink it (an will share it with you) accordingly (and they know a thing or two about food as well.). Piedmont has to be one of the best looking of an excellent bunch, Tuscany is a bit too perfect, but Piedmont is the real thing, oceans on undulating vines, heavy with dusty black grapes and naked earth between.
