For anyone visiting New Orleans, a boat tour into the Bayou is a must do experience. Not just for the alligators, which will delight (and sometimes terrify) kids and adults alike, but also for the eery and spectacular waterlogged landscape of french-moss laden forests and reed filled swamp.

Like an African safari it’s best appreciated, in my view, without crowds, so choosing a small jetboat over one of the larger but cheaper tourist boats is the better option if you can afford it – not least because the ride is faster and so much more fun, especially if you have kids. Second, you should look for an operator – and there are literally dozens – that operates in an area of swamp that it calls its own, because the last thing you want is a swarm of jetboats all jostling around the same stretch of swamp. Ticking both those boxes then, is airboattours.com, a family run outfit with just 5 boats, and access to a wonderful stretch of Bayou where few other boats venture. Run by the charming (and informative) Cathy and her husband Arthur in Des Allemands, it’s a 45 minute ride out of town, but worth every mile to reach. Tours last an hour or an hour and a half – whatever you do, if you choose the hour, don’t let on to the kids there was an extra half hour option.

If you're lucky, you'll get to handle baby alligators and feed some of the whopping monsters that are out there. A great ride.
