On the fringes of the Mayan Riviera tourist developments is the Ma'ax Yetel Kooh Nature Reserve, which, as well as preserving Mayan ruins and animals who exist within its forest boundaries, has also preserved a few small towns on its borders – like Punta Laguna. Here life is lived at a different pace, pigs and chickens seem to have right of way, and people have time to make their own tortillas instead of rushing to the shops to buy them...

The reserve's most famous inhabitants are spider monkeys – the name of the reserve translates to 'House of the Spider Monkey and the Jaguar'– but there are also howler monkeys, pumas, jaguars, and the smaller, but no less exciting cutter ants.
