For European whale watchers who don’t like the cold of the arctic the Ligurian Sea in the Mediterranean is probably the best option. The basin and the Pelagos Sanctuary is rich in nutrients and has a high concentration of plankton and smaller fish which attract several cetacean species. The common ones are Fin Whales, Sperm Whales, Risso’s Dolphins and Striped Dolphins but scientists have found eight varieties in the area. The sanctuary covers the area between Tuscany, Sardinia, Corsica and the Cote d’Azure, so you can look forward to beautiful weather and a proper summer holiday vibe as well as some quality sightings.
I’m not sure if I should be recommending that you whale watch from the coast or go out in a boat. You can whale watch from on shore, though obviously better sightings are had from a boat, however traffic is a big issue for the Fin Whales and if the industry expands too much it could cause problems, so if you do want to get out there with the whales make sure you go with a company that is linked to the sanctuary.
