There are over 20 different whale and dolphin species living - and frolicking, and feeding , and looking after their young and migrating etc. – including some impressively large species like sperm whales, blue whales and Bryde’s whales. Whale watchers may also catch sight of a pilot whale or dwarf sperm whale, but the most common whale in these waters is the unfortunately named melon-headed whale, which many whale fans may never have seen before – or at least not in these numbers, here they’re found in pods of up to 500! The crowd pleasingly acrobatic spinners are the most commonly sighted dolphins along with bottlenoses.
Many of these whale and dolphin species follow a daily routine of feeding and playing so owners of the whale watching boats often have a very good idea of where they’ll be able to find various pods – many of the resorts, especially those on the private islands, will be able to offer visitors both morning and afternoon excursions. The other advantage of whale or dolphin watching in the Maldives is that the conditions are generally nice, the same can’t be said for the Arctic regions…

You leave from your island in the morning, ours was Hakura Hurra, sail for about an hour and see flying fish and a lot of other marine life then we found a huge pod of dolphins which followed our boat. We could lean out and touch them as we were so close. It was one of the best experiences of my life, i would recommend this trip 110%. The spinner dolphins love to show off and come flying out the sea flipping , spinning and sumersaulting it is totally awesome and you will love this trip weather you like animals or not. This is real dolphins in the wild that are left to do thier own thing, no bait is thrown in and the friendly staff know where to look for them.if you only do one trip whilst there then do the Dolphin Safari. You will not regret it.
