Humpbacks pass by the Cook Islands between July and October. The reef steers them in pretty close to the shore so you can either go out in a boat or stay on land. If you’re on land one of the best spots is along the northern shoreline of Rarotonga and the western shoreline around Black Rock. Anywhere the reef comes close to the shore will probably be a good sighting spot. Pilot whales live in these warm waters all year round. The Islands recently declared all their waters a whale conservation area and though there are whale watching tours you can take and some which will let you snorkel with the whales, local conservation organisations frown upon it.
