Silent, elegant and calm, freediving must be the most environmentally unintrusive watersport around. World-class competititors have reached over 200 metres in depth on one breath, but aside from the mental and physical strength gained from breath-holding at great depths and for long periods of time, the sport offers possibilities in underwater exploration that would be unthinkable whilst wearing bulky, noisy scuba equipment. Freedivers at Palm Beach explore the deep with no more specialist gear than a slimline diving mask and flippers (and a wetsuit, if it's cold), and are able to observe the large population of underwater wildlife at very close quarters without causing disturbance. With two reefs, 10-20 feet and 40-60 feet deep, this site is an excellent one for divers of all standards, with a lush, well-populated crown and ledges, turtles, sharks and myriad species of fish. The immediacy of this type of encounter is said to rival any to be had whilst scuba diving, and the daring closeness with the power of the sea is believed by some to reawaken our ancient instincts.
