My partner Marion and I have done a number of wilderness walking trails in Kruger National Park over the years. It’s almost an annual thing, an addictive thing.
These trails are situated in massive tracts of wilderness areas. Morning and evening walks radiate out from the rustic trails camps that sleep only eight guests and where the “fence” is meant to keep the guests in but not the wildlife out. No electricity, no air cons, just the bush and the wildlife. And the best trails rangers who can interpret every sound, every spoor.
There’s a community of local insiders who frequent the trails, and there have been a number of foreign visitors lucky enough to land a booking. Book at least a year in advance – or get lucky. This is not for the person who wants to view big game; it’s for those who want to immerse themselves in the bush, connect with nature again - and feel what its like not to be at the top of the food chain.
If you are able to choose a departure date then June to September is the best time. It is dry and warm by day, cool by night and the bush is sparse making animal sightings easier.
