We’ve kind of covered this world as far as land is concerned haven’t we? The only places left unchartered are the deep recesses of the sea that are pretty dark and chilly from what I can surmise. That doesn’t mean that we can’t feel like pioneers in some of the landscapes we’ve come across however. The Voyageur Trail allows hikers, backpackers, snow-shoe wearers and bush-whack skiers to experience the rugged, scenic beauty of sparsely populated Northern Ontario. A discontinuous trail of nearly 600km from Manitoulin Island to Thunder Bay along the shores of Lakes Huron and Superior has no trail amenities and parallels much of the trade route of the early Voyageurs, those hardy, French-speaking fur traders who helped to open up the area.

The challenging hikes along boulder-strewn beaches, spectacular views from high rocky ridges, camping beside quiet, picturesque inland lakes or strolls through gently rolling, forested hills, will leave you feeling like one of the early Voyageurs.
