The Routeburn Track is just off the Milford Track on the boarder between Mt. Aspiring National Park and Fjordland National Park, but less rain catchment means this area is more alpine in character. Pines and rocky outcrops rather than ferns and waterfalls make up the scenery.
The track winds walkers through picturesque mountain country between the Hollyford and Dart Valleys taking in steep rock faces, high alpine lakes and basins, waterfalls, spectacular mountain peaks and moist forests overgrown with moss.
You can reach many of the Routeburn’s highlights, such as Harris Saddle and Key Summit on a day trip if you’re a strong walker. At 38kms, you could complete the whole track in a day if you arranged your transport at either end.
With most people based in Queenstown it can be a five hour bus ride back if you don’t arrange a pick up. Not as busy as the Milford Track you have the option of walking in either direction, it is still advisable to book ahead to make sure you get a bed in the huts or a camping spot.
