The Otter and Whale Walking Trails

Listed under Walking in Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Situated as it is where Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, the South African coast is diverse, sometimes wild and always spectacular. Both these trails follow the scenic South Cape coast and are located in formal protected areas that include marine protected areas (national parks in the sea).

The Otter Trail (5 days): For decades this has been the country’s premier trail. It follows the rugged Tsitsikamma National Park coast dipping down into wooded canyons and cresting fynbos ridges. In the warmer months take the time to snorkel in the inter-tidal pools. The are a number of river crossings at river mouths that can be tricky and require good planning and timing. Fair fitness is required.

The Whale Trail (5 days): To me this is the best trail in SA at present. It has a “slackpacking” option for those who do not see their way open to carry rucksacks. The first two days climbing and descending Potberg Mountain are the hardest; thereafter it is pure hedonism along this beautiful coast. In whale season, from June to September, you can stroll along the clifftops and watch Southern Right whales sound, blow and breach. It is literally “wall to wall” with whales.
