A section of the Selinda Game Reserve is kept for walking safaris, one of the best ways to get close to some of these impressive animals and one of the best experiences I have ever had. I had no idea I would see half as many animals as I did, but the highlights were of course the elephants - which is why I chose Selinda, seeing lions hunt hippos, getting really close to a den of wild dogs (quite scary considering how amazing their sense of smell is.) and seeing the lion cubs with their Mums and Dads as they learned how to catch buffalo by practicing on a recently deceased cow. This is the kind of thing you can see on nature documentaries all the time and I was worried I was going to find it old hat, but it was different in the flesh, much more frightening and real.

Numbers are strictly limited to groups of six with guides and you sleep overnight in canvas ‘huts’ (which are really more like tree houses, about eight feet off the ground.). The walking is very easy going, the point being to stop and look and ask questions and because the camps are already there you don’t have to carry anything, making it more like a stroll through some kind of open zoo (or the actual wild even!) than a hike or a trek. Our guides were totally indispensable, they knew the herds intimately and were able to find them easily, so we saw so much more than if we had have just through in a jeep.
