Mount Bogong is the highest mountain in Victoria (at slightly under 2,000 metres).
It has a nice remote feeling as the main access is from the valley around the township of Mount Beauty, which requires a climb of well over 1,000 metres. It has a wonderful other worldly feel when you're up on the summit ridge, with distant farmland and lower ranges far below. The mountain is a big, arching ridge that folds around Cairn Creek and looms above Mount Beauty. In early summer the wildflowers are superb.
The big, south-facing gullies and slopes offer superb skiing, generally getting gnarlier as you head westwards. The northside is rockier and more impressive but tends to lose its snow cover more quickly. There is some good winter climbing near the top of Staircase Spur around the Pollux and Castor outcrops.
It can be done as a long day walk or a pleasant weekend hike, or as part of a longer through walk to the Bogong High Plains or Mount Wills.
Mt Bogong is very exposed and the weather can change at short notice. Always treat this mountain with respect and carry warm and weatherproof gear in all seasons. Always take map and compass. There are refuge huts near the tree line on each of the 2 main routes, and a wonderful old stone hut on the mountain itself - Cleve Cole. There is great and well protected camping in the snow gum forests around Cleave Cole, or many more exposed sites higher up on the summit ridge.
Summary of walking tracks available.
