I’d like to recommend the walk from Chamonix to Zermatt in the summer. The alpine scenery is picturesque and the walk can be done in several stages. The leg from Grächen to Zermatt is called the Europaweg and can be walked in two days.
It’s a steep walk for the most part. The walk begins with a steep ascent up the slope of the Grat, then peaks at around 2500m above the Grat on a rocky path with excellent views. Below that is a section of rough shale and broken rock as you descend into a brief ridge then head upwards again towards a yellow coloured cliff.
The highest point on the first day is at 2700m. After about an hours walking on the second day the Matterhorn comes into view, and beyond it Zermatt. The path here has been built harshly into the cliff rather that the cattle trails of the first day, this is in part to steel the trail against rock falls, but it is still dangerous.
Once you have risen past Tuften it is down hill, partly on a ski run, to Zermatt. A camera is essential, this is some of the loveliest scenery you can imagine.
Accommodation is comfortable and you can get good food and drink at chalets and huts at several points along the route. You can do the trip in a day if you leave early, but you may have to keep stopping to take photos.
