Villarica is the most consistently active volcano of Chile's beautiful Lake District. The funnel-like crater contains a small lava pond and when the usual Strombolian activity is low, Villarica can be more or less safely climbed. Crampons and ice axes are needed for the 5 hour ascent. The summit offers fantastic views of the region's many lakes and volcanoes, including the active Llaima volcano to the north. The resort town of Pucon is situated on the shores of a large lake at the foot of the volcano, which often emits a red glow at night.
