This volcano is in one of the world’s top wilderness destinations, Isla Isabela, one of the Galapagos Islands. Sierra Negra rises threateningly over Isabela, all the more so because of its relatively regular activity - it has erupted ten times in the last 200 years. Rifts along the islands rim expel lava in mini eruptions which have given Isabela its large apron like balcony edges. The windward side of Sierra Negra picks up a lot of moisture and the mineral rich soils mean some of the Galapagos’s most verdant and dense vegetation. It’s both logical and illogical that one of only two Galapagos settlements would be in this lush region.
