The catastrophic 1902 eruption caused the entire southwest face of beautifully symmetrical Santa Maria volcano to blow out. In 1922 a series of lava domes formed in the gaping wound. This dome complex, known as Santiaguito, has been erupting continuously since it was born. Santiaguito's active dome regularly sends up mushroom clouds of ash and small pyroclastic flows down its sides, sometimes as frequently as once or twice per hour. Don't get too close to the base of the active dome due to the pyroclastic flow hazard. Larger eruptions occur unpredictably, so caution is definitely advised in this area. A safer option is to climb to the towering summit of Santa Maria itself and look down onto the erupting dome from high above.
