Mount Rinjani is one of Indonesia's many still-active volcanoes. It is its second highest and also, debatably, its most beautiful. Looming over the island of Lombok, it is now a national park, and its isolated upper slopes are blanketed in forest. Soaring 3,726 metres up in a helicopter, it is possible to view it in all its glory, and cruise across its ten-kilometer-wide, plunging crater. Surrounded by hot springs and lined with steep gorges, waterfalls and rich greenery, the crater is half-filled by a lake so still and clear that the shadow of the helicopter can be seen drifting across it. A mound of cooled lava rises in the centre of the lake, an eerie reminder of the still frequent eruptions, and the solidified flows seem to have been frozen in time, poised to plunge into the lake with the next eruption.
