The Xcaret Eco Park doesn’t scream excitement. It might be the ‘eco park’ that led me to believe that, but thankfully it isn’t one of those attractions that chastise you for what you have (or haven’t) done to save the planet. ‘Eco Park’ reads for this attraction as a cross between ecology and theme park. I can hear the collective sigh now! Basically architect Miguel Quintana bought the area to build his dream home, but when he started clearing the land he found cenotes formed by collapsed cave ceilings and the natural beauty struck him so much that he felt he couldn’t keep it to himself, meaning Xcaret was born.

The park is an assault on the senses – you can watch and interact with the parrots as they fly freely in this tropical paradise, walk around the orchid greenhouse admiring the colourful spray of 89 endemic species and their fragrance drifting with the Mexican air or take a visit to the Mayan ruins. This is before you even get close to the sea turtles and jaguars, watch the night-time shows and visit the coral reef aquarium before jumping in to have a splash with the dolphins before relaxing on the beach with a sangria.
