This is the oldest zoo in New Zealand, it was built in 1906, but the real reason it's interesting – beyond being a zoo that is, is for its conservation programs and its collection of local creatures. For the rare and endangered team there's the Sun Bear, some Campbell Island teals and a couple of delightful Sumatran Tiger cubs, and on the local side are the kiwis (of course), tuatara, kaka, kereru and keas.

The most famous resident is Tahi, the one legged kiwi and the zoo's mascot, who is brought out every day at 1:15 to meet his fans – he's even had a book written about him.
