When the tracks for the Little Green Train were laid in 1888 they were to transport farmers and shopkeepers and local functionaries, but these days those would be passengers have cars and the train is mostly filled with tourists wanting a glimpse of Sardinia’s quieter, more rural, less resort-y interior.

The train’s route runs between Arbatax and Mandas though scrubby foothills and farmland then up into the mountains past vineyards and fields of poppies. The rails switch back and forwards going up the mountains which makes for some pretty dramatic moments before chugging into sleepy Mandas.
