This turned out to be one of the highlights of my stay in Taipei.  This zoo only costs US$2 to see (compared to the San Diego Zoo's $50 entrance fee!) and has all kinds of open air, free roaming cages.  There are several koalas, TONS of hippos, two pandas, horned bills, all kinds of unique Formosan animals that are rarely seen in the zoos in the US.  Also close to the Zoo is the Maokong Gondola, which you can ride for US$2 to see a stunning view of Taipei.
