Famous for its giant panda bears, the National Zoo houses more than 2,000 animals from 400 different species including cheetahs, gorillas and  Mexican cavefish. The zoo is set in downtown DC but the landscape and trees give the illusion of being miles away.

In the summer months the zoo releases Golden Lion Tamarins in a section of the zoo called beaver valley, so make sure to look up into the trees maybe you’ll catch a glimpse of these little guys. The zoo offers a daily schedule of free programs which may include learning about different types of animals in the zoo or watching a feeding of the bald eagles. One of the big events for the zoo throughout the year is Boo in the Zoo. This is a great event for children to dress up in their Halloween costumes and trick-or-treat around the candy stations set up throughout the zoo. The zoo also has a Christmas lights walk in December. Because of contributions from dedicated guests the zoo is offered free to the public.
