Take a cruise past Lady Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and Ellis Island for nix and sail past the shimmering towers of Wall Street and the skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan for nothing on the Staten Island ferry. Of course the ferry is crowded and you have to act quickly if you want to get a bench seat, but this is a free ride in New York so don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Considering the view you probably won’t want to sit down anyway, but walk from the front to the back taking photos and remembering to make sure you see the other side of the bay on the return journey.

The Staten Island Ferry operates 24 hours a day, leaves about ever half hour and the journey takes about an hour. Fact fans will love this – about 60,000 people take the ferry between Staten Island and Manhattan.
