For a true glimpse of Telluride’s thriving arts community, the Sheridan Opera House is a must. Today the opera house is a center for art forms ranging from concerts to movie premieres. As a non-profit venue, it benefits local and national charitable organizations and holds various charity events. A trip to the Sheridan Opera House is well worth it for the art and entertainment experience as well as the chance to explore the beautiful building itself.
Built in 1913 by local miners, the opera house was originally a vaudeville theater and cultural center. By this time the mining town had flourished and the rowdy bars and saloons were beginning to give way to a more cultured atmosphere. The Sheridan was built to accommodate these changing tastes. The opera house faced much success in the following decades, but by 1991 it was outdated, dilapidated and faced the threat of demolition. Fortunately the Sheridan Arts Foundation formed and was able to prevent that fate. Today the opera house is prized for the variety shows, orchestras, touring theater companies and performers like Lillian Gish, Sarah Bernhard and Jackson Browne that have graced its stage. The building itself is celebrated as well and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
