This decadently baroque palace is the largest of several in Berlin and dates back to the end on the 17th century, when it was commissioned by Sophie Charlotte, the wife of the Prussian king. It's also the only building connected with the Prussian royal family, the Hohenzollerns, remaining in the city. The area would have been a village at the time, surrounded by woodland, but as the family became more powerful, the palace and its formal gardens were expanded and filled with more and more lavish rococo decorations, unique features and indulgently beautiful works of art. One room, given as a gift to Tsar Peter the Great, is entirely lined in carved amber and gold, and the grounds contain an ornate belvedere, a carp lake, a private theatre and a family mausoleum.
