Graceful and understated the two baroque buildings of the Belvedere are white, many windowed and pale green roofed dollhouse dreams. Symmetrical on approach the neat strips of grass and pale pebbled pathways add to the appeal.

The Lower Belvedere was built first in 1714, as a ‘garden villa’ and a place to display art. It was the work of the major baroque architect of the day and a renowned Venetian sculptor who did the states in the garden and the balustrades. The final touch before completion was the ceiling painting in the Marble Hall which casts Prince Eugene, the villa’s future resident as Apollo.

The Upper Belvedere is more a palace, long, flat and symmetrical it was finished in 1723, and became Prince Eugene’s summer residence. It later became a Habsburg residence, but after Franz Ferdinand’s assassination it was used as a gallery and now houses work from some of the best known of Austria’s artists including Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. Klimt’s ‘The Kiss’ is one of the highlights of the collection which is made up of works from the middle ages and baroque periods as well as Klimt’s Art Nouveau era.

For some people the buildings are as artistic as what they keep the rain off.
