It's not particularly authentic, but it does sound like fun: a nice jaunt out on a replica of Christopher Columbus' Santa Maria. The crew dress in period costume while taking you out for a sail, with real sails, on Funchal's harbour to join the dolphins and whales – fingers crossed. The trip usually takes visitors out to some scenic cliffs and back, allowing people to jump off and go for a swim at the midway point.

The Santa Maria goes out twice a day. It was originally built by a man 'who just wanted to build a boat', but it was such a popular idea that people seem to be quite keen to sail on its mahogany boards. At 22 metres long she's longer than the original, and though the original only held 40 crew, this one can sail with up to 100 guests.
