Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet)

The Swedish King and Queen may spend most of their time in living in Drottinngholm partly because their formal royal residence, Kungliga Slottet, is open to the public. Like Buckingham Palace it’s also where they work. Kungliga Slottet has had a thousand years worth of royal and court hands shaping it and some of the 608 rooms and apartments are grander than others – not all of the functioning ones are open to the public. Some of the most regal and royally decorated are the royal apartments on the second floor. This suite was last touched by interior decorators in the 1690’s when it was painted by French artist. In the Hall of State, which is like a throne room, is Queen Christina’s silver throne. The guest rooms are far better than any hotel you could imagine, but then often it was royalty coming to stay, and when Gustav Vasa was King in the 16th Century he sent out invitations to noblemen inviting them to come around and watch him wake up in the morning in these suites.

The gold mines of the treasury and armoury are also open to the public and like Buckingham Palace there is a ceremonial military ceremony held each daily similar to the changing of the guard. There is a museum onsite which houses more royal relics
