One of the oldest farmers markets in the US, the Pike Place Market has stayed open through the whole cycle of fashionable eating habits since 1907. The market covers 9 acres worth of premium Seattle land between First Avenue and Western Avenue. As well as farm fresh produce, visitors will come upon, if they can find them in the crush of small shop fronts, Antique dealers, comic book stores, and restaurants. But the main reason to come down is for the fruit and veg straight off the vine or out of the ground and the chance to meet the people who grow the stuff who rent their tables by the day.

The largest semi-permanent stall belongs to a fishmonger, Sol, who has been here more than 50 years boy and man. He’s now a fixture and can give advice about choosing and preparing fish which is probably better than anyone else in the world. During his time at the market the famous ‘flying fish’ act begun, where one employee stands at each table and when someone orders something from another table they throw it to each other – quicker and more entertaining for the crowds. The other local icon is the first ever Starbucks – which bares the original bare breasted logo.

Seattle Lavender

Don’t leave Seattle without its scent of lavender. Pike’s Place Farmer’s Market is filled with places to purchase something lavender, but I recommend Sequim Lavender Farm for its oils.
