Not as grand as some other royal residences, the Palais Princier, home of the Grimaldis of Monaco has retained its job as royal residence since the end of the 13th Century. While rulers of other nations beautified their palaces, the Grimaldis fortified theirs against the power of their larger stronger neighbors. But it paid off in the end, Monaco is still a sovereign state, after being ruled by the Grimaldis for 700 years.

Unlike other royalty Monaco doesn’t have the space for additional castles so they repaired and rebuilt sections of this one, which is why it’s such and architectural mish mash. The façade is mostly Renaissance, the back medieval and the inside is modeled on Versailles.

Prince Rainier made great repairs to the castle now the home of his son and successor Albert II. In summer the state rooms are open to the public and concerts are held in the courtyard, which is also used for royal addresses – well it is a working palace and place of government.
