Oljato Navajo Trading Post

Listed under Visitor Attractions in Southwest Desert, United States.

In the depths of the Arizona desert lies Monument Valley, famous for its vibrant red sand and majestic rock formations, so frequently seen in the movies that they have almost become national monuments.

Like a set lifted directly out of one of the many western films made here, the trading post at the Navajo town of Oljato was once all things to all people – a general store, a credit agency, an undertaker’s shop and the local centre of literacy, to name a few. Built in 1921 for Navajo traders to exchange goods and news, it is still maintained by a local proprietor, but the rugs, beadwork, baskets, dolls, pottery and other items that were once traded here for food and other essentials are now purchased by tourists, and the cost of the upkeep is supplemented with the income from horseback trips and wagon rides.

Tours are available to see Mystery Valley, the site of some ancient cliff dwellings, Rainbow Bridge, a perfect sandstone arch carved by the wind, the Totem Poles and numerous other surreal desert sights.
