Set in a complex of modern, desert earth-hued, crudely cube-edged buildings in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, this museum contains educational exhibits, artefacts and indigenous art from Asia, Africa, Oceania and America. The permanent collection is huge and contains some surprising and even occasionally controversial items – perhaps unsurprising given the museum's purpose of displaying specifically 'primitive', non-European objects in a manner that seems to hint, for some, at 18th century Orientalism. However, if you're comfortable with reading the label for every object to ascertain its geographical and temporal origin (since they're often mixed up), you'll find plenty of intriguing and beautiful items to wonder at, including hand-drawn maps made by the first European explorers of Australia, symbolic weaponry from the Middle East, an audio-exhibition exploring the development of oral traditions in the Arab world, and sketches made by artists on board Captain Cook's ships.
