Aside from its illustrious literary connections and reputation as Germany's 'Venice of the North', Lubeck is also famous for its marzipan. Although the truth of the legend of this confection's accidental invention by a Lubeck baker pushed for ingredients during the 1407 famine has never quite been established, no other city has ever laid claim to the achievement. Lubeck's status as a busy, historic port might also have had something to do with it, since thousands of ships would have arrived here during the 15th century, carrying goods from the Middle East, and marzipan might have been amongst them. Either way, Lubeck marzipan is famous worldwide, not just for its fine quality but for the local bakers' skill in manufacturing marzipan fruits, animals and all manner of amusing objects. If it's something you can't get enough of, pay a visit to Marzipan Land and watch demonstrations, peruse marzipan art works, learn to make your own, taste free samples and shop for your very own soft, sweet, gently-blushing marzipan pig!
