In amongst the rainforest, Kuranda is the hippy town which sold out to the tourist buck. The 650 residents now make most of their money selling new-age-y trinkets and cream teas to visitors who arrive via the Kuranda Scenic Railway, which meanders spectacularly along the steep, densely rainforested gullies and ridges. The railway chugs peacefully, kind of matching with the hippy ideals you may be expecting but the Skyrail cable cars say peace and free love even less.
