Wishing for a return to the old ways of life? Kleinburg in Canada might just be the village to rejuvenate the soul. Nestled atop the Humber River ridge and surrounded by spectacular views, the village is a testament to early Canadian architecture and oozes a good old-fashioned atmosphere as you walk around its pleasantries. Founded in 1848 by miller John Kline, the village boasts some unique boutiques and design shops. It is also close to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and Kortright Conservation area. Of course, a small and traditional village attracts prosperity and new homes that were built at the beginning of the 21st century will set you back a cool million bucks – and they’re the cheapest!

The Toronto National Film Studios are also found here, meaning that the odd star or two may be about but the highlight on the Kleinburg calendar is the Binder Twine Festival held in September. In remembrance of the farmers coming in the 1800s to buy twine to bind their sheaves of wheat, the festival is a day of entertainment, “Olde Tyme”. For many, the highlight of the day is a unique Queen Contest where eligible “young ladies” (age 16 to eternity) call a hog, flip pancakes, hammer nails, and even milk a cow. The first official duty of the newly crowned Binder Twine Queen is to draw the winning ticket for the festival’s Quilt Raffle, where obviously you win a quilt, but a special one made up of patches sown by the avid village knitters. Cute?
