Part of the museum complex enjoying the hospitality of graceful, Neo-Beroque Budavári Palota, or Buda Castle, the Hungarian National Gallery is a collection of some of the best pieces of Hungarian art. The exhibitions are divided up into the Renaissance and Baroque collection, Gothic Wooden Statues, Late Gothic altars, Medieval and Renaissance stone, 19th and 20th Century art and sculptures and Contemporary art. This is a large collection sprawling over four floors and containing more than 6000 paintings, 21,000 sculptures and 11,000 drawings. Below the gallery is the royal crypt where the Hungarian Habsburgs were buried from 1820 and it is decorated with more examples of the best of Hungarian art.

The National Gallery has an exhibition showing some of the best known Hungarian painters including Mihaly Munkacsy, Pal Szinyei-Merse and many more.
Dont expect too much from this run-down museum. It sometimes has good special exhibitions though.
