A time capsule capturing the extravagance of Hollywood’s early heyday, Hearst Castle is an opulent estate turned historic monument located approximately 250 miles north of Los Angeles.

It garnered its fame when William Randolph Hearst, a newspaper magnate who had a hand in politics and the booming film industry, inherited the estate from his father, wealthy miner George Hearst. W.R. Hearst hired famed architect Julia Morgan to design a home on the property. With expensive tastes and the means to fund them, W.R. Hearst filled the weekend home with the finest European art and decor. The palatial estate grew to encompass over 90,000 square feet with a main building, three guest houses and multiple, lavish pools. During the 1920s and 30s, as Heart’s movie company Cosmopolitan Pictures grew in success, Hearst Castle became a playground and weekend escape for his Hollywood elite friends as well as respected dignitaries like Winston Churchill.

After Hearst’s death, the family gave Hearst Castle to the state of California, which now preserves the complex as a State Historical Monument where tours, a gift shop and educational films offer a glimpse at the lavish, early Hollywood lifestyle that built the castle.
