It's hard not to be moved by the romance of Salzburg, even if you wish you'd never watched 'The Sound of Music'. Its Alpine backdrop, huge, Medieval, hilltop fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site baroque Old Town packed with famously beautiful churches, rococo palaces, ornamental gardens mean that there's something to sigh happily at around ever corner, so there's surely no more fitting a way to explore than in an elegant horse-drawn carriage. It's true that prices are aimed at tourists but it's worth it all the same, particularly if you go off-season and avoid the crowds. If you choose, you can take a guided tour of the city this way, as well; it takes about an hour and includes all the main sites, including Mozart's house, at which stage you'll no doubt be informed that he used to travel this way, too.
