Captivating your eyes on first sight, this very large castle sits high on Festungsberg Hill. 250 meters long and 150 meters wide it is one of the largest medieval castles in all of Europe.  It has served several purposes in its lifetime-- temporary residences to prince archbishops, barracks and a military outpost for several wars and as a prison for Italian prisoners of war during World War I.  Unlike many castles, Hohensalzburg was never conquered or destroyed and thus remains one of the best preserved fortresses of its time. It has been a major tourist attraction since the 20th century and has an active cable car leading up from the town of Hasengrabenbastei. Many visitors especially enjoy the princess' apartment as well as the museum which is now inside the fortress.
