You don’t have to be a fan of the music to feel the pull of the King and while visiting Graceland is a pilgrimage for some for others it is a way to get inside the home (and a little into the head) of a real celebrity. Elvis bought Graceland in 1957and moved in with his parents and later Pricilla and died (unless you believe in the conspiracy theories) of a heart attack here in 1977 and is now buried in the backyard ‘Meditation Gardens’. Graceland has 23 rooms including eight bedrooms and looks very much the classical mansion, all pale and pillared on the outside and brightly coloured (Elvis is said to have favoured reds, purples and pinks) and glitzy on the inside, including swimming pools in bedrooms, TV rooms with three or four sets and the famous ‘jungle room’ with it’s indoor waterfall. Poke your nose into his impressive garage and see his Caddies, MG’s and Harleys as well as the Lisa Marie, his private jet, see his impressive array of awards and an exhibition of his costumes showing the evolution from jeans to rhinestone jumpsuit. If you’re really serious you can stay overnight at the Heartbreak Hotel across the road. Appropriately situated at 3734 Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee, you can take an official tour or an audio tour and go at your own pace - bear in mind photography is prohibited (but there is plenty of choice when it comes to souvenirs), through the downstairs portion of the house. The busiest time of year is around Elvis’s birthday in January and the anniversary of his death in August.
