A visit to the Eagle's Nest begins with a winding journey up the Kehlstein Mountain to an elevation of 1834 metres. Access is gained via a long, stone tunnel cut into the side of the mountain's peak. A ride up through the rock to the pinnacle in a polished brass lift brings the visitor out into the building itself, which has metre-thick walls and commands incomparable views of Berchtesgaden. Designed by Martin Bormann with appreciation of the surrounding countryside as well as privacy and security in mind, the Eagle's Nest was given as a birthday gift from the Nazi Party to Adolf Hitler, and although he rarely used it, there's still something peculiar in the experience of visiting such a beauty spot and associating him with it. It's now a slightly austere restaurant, bookshop and museum.
