In 1896, the Mayor of Denver received Billy Bryan, an orphaned black bear who needed a home. To solve the predicament of housing a mischievous bear, the Denver Zoo was created. Today the zoo is home to 3,500 animals and 650 species.
Central to the zoo is its mission of preservation. Nearly 200 species at the zoo are listed as endangered or threatened, and three species are even listed as extinct. The zoo’s educational outreach programs are extensive and focus on conserving wildlife and natural resources. To reach as large an audience as possible, programs are tailored to family and children, teens and adults. In fact the zoo aims to make life as comfortable as possible for its animal residents and human visitors alike.
(The photo is a Black bear in negative I think...)
