This semi circular, black basalt fort was built to defend this Canary capital and its port from pirates and there are some pretty dramatic historic stories surrounding it. As the pirates became less of a threat the fort was just left sitting there for about a hundred years until it was commandeered for use as an art museum, the Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporaneo, in the 1970’s. The black volcanic slabs used in the Castillo’s interior floors and stairways and the white walls are an ideal setting for works by Picasso, Miro and Lanzarote’s own most famous son Cesar Manrique.

As well as art, Manrique contributed a stylish modern restaurant and concert hall to the building.
