At least as pretty as a picture or postcard perfect, this castle is at its most beautiful as you approach it. In a wood of pointed fir trees its conical towers with their witches hat roofs poke above the main building and its wall drops below the bottom of the castle on the steepest parts of the hill it sits on, revealing green gardens. The first burg here was built in the 11th Century on a rocky hill overlooking a pretty river valley. It was a hunting lodge for the Princes of Salzburg. Now the perfect extinct castle it’s decked out with exhibitions of its past for visitors to immerse themselves in. Displays of falconry and the falconry exhibition elevate Hohenwerfen above Salzburg’s other picture perfect castles.
