Opened in 1866 as private concern the Budapest Zoo is now the second oldest in Europe – so a historic attraction as well as a wildlife one – though animal rights activists need not get upset, conditions have changed with the times and now the enclosures are at the peak of modern naturalism. Around 700 different species take up the offer of the zoo’s hospitality.

The zoo started off with a large but none too exotic collection of beasts, many owned by private individuals, quite a few by Franz Joseph, but more exotic animals, like tigers, lions, elephants, ostriches and bison were adopted over the first ten years of the zoo being open.

Sadly the zoo took a beating in the Second World War and most of the animals and some of the art nouveau buildings were flattened, but it grew up from the ashes and is now has an international reputation for its endangered animal breeding programs. In addition to the animals and remaining original architecture the zoo has a palm house exhibit and a wax house where you can see some extinct animals. If it sounds a bit dry it’s not – it’s one of the most popular attractions in Hungary.

In the off season the zoo closes at 5pm but in the high, warm season it’s open until 7.

H-1146 Budapest, Állatkerti krt. 6-12.
