A word almost universally associated with New York and its theatres, Broadway is actually one of the oldest thoroughfares in the city. It runs right from the historical southern tip of Manhattan once known as New Amsterdam to the relatively leafy neighbourhood of Inwood, at the northernmost point of the island. As Broadway passes through Times Square the traffic is often packed so tight you have to walk to the end of the block to cross, though it’s pretty convenient for hailing a cab. Broadway’s theatre district is an institution in itself and a must-see for first time visitors, even if it is just to stand and pose under the lighted awnings you’ve seen in countless movies.
